On Friday the GHK Lady Pirates had a home game against the Stratton Eagles. The Lady Pirates were excited for this game and knew they had to play hard to win. The Lady Eagles came out fired up and won the first two matches. Coach Simmons gave an inspiring talk to the Lady Pirates and got them back into game mode and the Lady Pirates came out and won the next two matches and sent the game into a fifth match where it is the first team to 15 points and win by 2. The Lady Pirates were not going to let all their hard work go to nothing and they ended up winning the whole game. The Lady Pirates also had a tournament in Swink with Swink, Holly, and Cheraw. The Lady Pirates beat the Cheraw Wolverines in 3 easy matches. They next faced Holly and also beat them in 3 matches. The last game for the Lady Pirates was against the Swink Lions. This game was the toughest of the day and went into 5 matches but ended up losing a close one.
Pirate Win Over Stratton a First for Coaching Staff October 12, 2009
The GHK Pirate football team had a home game this weekend against the Stratton Eagles. The boys knew this was going to be a good tough game and knew they were going to have to play hard to get the win. Coach Clark, Coach Graham, and Coach Hannigan have never beaten the Stratton Eagles as long as they have been coaching at Genoa-Hugo so they were really stoked for this game.
The Pirates started out scoring the first touchdown but the Eagles answered right back with a score of their own. Halftime came and the score was 14 to 12 in favor of the Pirates. The third quarter was rough but the Pirates held their lead. Going into the fourth quarter, the teams were tired and cold but knew they had to finish strong. The Pirates ended the game with another touchdown by Taylor Russell. The coaches were ecstatic with the win. Good Job, boys!
Lady Pirates Take Mustangs September 16, 2009
The GHK Lady Pirates squared off against the Woodlin Mustangs last night for what was supposed to be a close match. The Lady Pirates disagreed.
In the first match, the Mustangs took a small lead over the Lady Pirates but with a lot of team work and communicating, the Lady Pirates were able to overcome their deficit and win the first match.
The second match was not like the first one. The Lady Pirates pulled ahead right away and never let down, winning the second match. The last match was a repeat of the second one as the Lady Pirates demolished the Mustangs and took the game in 3 out of 5 matches.
Fowler suspect interrupts Friday Night Lights September 14, 2009
The Pirate Football team hit the road to face Fowler for what they thought would be a tough matchup. As it turned out, GHK athletes returned to Hugo without playing at all.
Student Kurtis Ashmore said, “we were told there was an active shooter in the area and were told to either evacuate or go home,”
GHK athletes evacuated to the locker room and also to the gym to await news of the precarious situation. Students waited about 30 minutes before reloading the bus and returning to Hugo. Students later learned that the alleged shooter was not at the game but the incident occurred to ensure public safety. The game will not be rescheduled.
